Asia rice: Indian prices hit more than one-year high on strong rupee, tight supply

Business Recorder reported on October 22 that Indian export rice prices climbed again, reaching their strongest level in over a year. The 5% broken parboiled grade was offered at $387-$392 per ton, compared with $384-$389 the previous week, while the white variety was priced at $389-$394. A firmer rupee and constrained availability were cited alongside modest demand.

A Kolkata exporter said sellers were adjusting quotes to reflect currency movements. Industry officials told Reuters that weak rainfall during crop maturation could reduce India’s output, potentially marking its first annual decline in a decade and the sharpest drop in nearly 20 years. Vietnam and Thailand prices were unchanged at $440-$450 and $480 per ton, respectively, while Bangladesh rice prices stayed high as fuel costs rose.

At a glance

  • Indian parboiled rice prices rose to $387-$392 per ton.
  • Poor rainfall could reduce India’s rice harvest.
  • Vietnamese and Thai prices were unchanged this week.
