Direct flights between Pakistan and Maldives on the horizon as PM stresses connectivity

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to prepare a feasibility plan for direct air services between Pakistan and the Maldives, Dawn reported on Thursday. Speaking at a bilateral business forum in Islamabad, he said the service could be operated by Pakistan International Airlines or another Pakistani carrier. Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu separately said his country’s national airline aims to begin direct flights between Malé and Karachi soon.

The leaders also agreed to pursue a rise in bilateral trade from about $13 million to $200 million over the next two years. Shehbaz called for plans covering air and shipping links, while Muizzu invited Pakistani businesses to explore opportunities in areas including food logistics, pharmaceuticals, construction, renewable energy and tourism. The announcements set out proposed cooperation and targets, rather than confirming that flights or new trade arrangements have begun.
