Fuel imports: USD1bn can be saved by adding 30,000 REEVs annually, experts say
Business Recorder • • 2 min read

Auto industry experts believe Pakistan could reduce its fuel import spending by more than USD 1 billion across five years if 30,000 range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) enter the market annually, according to Business Recorder. The projection assumes a fleet of 150,000 vehicles by year five, which could replace about 1.2 billion litres of petrol and reduce carbon output by roughly 2.7 million tons in operation compared with petrol cars. The savings would hinge on how far cars are driven, how they are charged and how often electricity powers them.
Business Recorder explains that REEVs drive the wheels with electric motors, while a petrol engine works as an on-board generator to recharge the battery when needed. The setup allows everyday trips on electricity and keeps extra range for intercity journeys. Industry insiders say REEVs with roughly 150 to 180 kilometres of electric range would cover a large share of everyday driving if charged at home, including through rooftop solar.
Changan Motors Pakistan's chief operating officer, Ali Damani, said steady policy, charging networks and local production could turn these consumer benefits into wider national gains. Some REEV owners who charge largely from rooftop solar reportedly cut monthly fuel bills by up to Rs65,000, though the figure changes with vehicle use and charging costs. Industry insiders also estimate that lifting annual additions to 60,000 would roughly double the fuel-displacement gains under similar assumptions.
