Pakistan LPG shortage worsens after border closure, traders say
BUSINESS RECORDER • • 1 min read

Business Recorder reported on October 23 that traders are facing worsening LPG shortages after the Gabd-Rimdan and Taftan crossings with Iran were shut on October 17. The stoppage interrupted imports from Iran, which supplies Pakistan with about 7,000 metric tons of LPG daily, according to the Pakistan LPG Association. Gabd-Rimdan reopened on Wednesday for Pakistani shipments of perishable goods, but LPG tankers remained among the trucks stranded at the border.
Traders said a 12 kg cylinder had climbed to 7,000 rupees from 4,500 within days. Reported prices varied by location, reaching 7,500 rupees in Lahore and 8,200 rupees in Skardu, while a Lahore resident said his per-kilogram cost had doubled or more to 500-600 rupees. The Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry advised members to pause fresh orders from Iran, and the LPG association’s chairman warned that supply problems and price increases could deepen.
Pakistan and Iran have given different explanations for the crossing closures, with Pakistani officials citing security and anti-smuggling concerns and Iran pointing to technical issues. Iran’s foreign ministry said discussions on restoring trade were in progress, while Pakistan’s army chief also raised border matters with Iranian leaders during a visit to Tehran.
