Kohinoor Energy, Chinese firm plan battery manufacturing in Pakistan

Business Recorder reported that Kohinoor Energy and China's Hebei Juhang Energy Technology Group have entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding on a possible joint venture in Pakistan. Under the pact, the partners would weigh a local venture to assemble and produce lithium-ion battery packs and storage units, according to a notice Kohinoor Energy filed with the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday. The MoU is dated 1 October 2026, and the company describes Hebei Juhang as a company incorporated in China.

Kohinoor operates a 124 MW power plant in Lahore and sells the electricity it generates to a single buyer, WAPDA. The battery project is planned in stages, beginning with annual capacity of roughly 50-100 MWh, then expanding to about 300-500 MWh and eventually 700-1,000 MWh. Each stage depends on market demand, business performance and the conditions set out in the notice.

The company noted the MoU is non-binding and depends on further review, due diligence, approvals and final contracts. A projection cited in the report puts Pakistan's battery pack imports at 8.75 GWh by 2030. Monthly lithium battery imports reached a record $88 million in July 2026, a surge the report links to high electricity costs, lower solar prices and a revised net billing framework.
