Apple's foldable iPhone hits stores with $2,000 price tag and scarce supply

Apple began selling its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, on Friday at a price of about $2,000, while limiting purchases as stock remained tight. Business Recorder reported that delivery estimates moved to late January soon after pre-orders opened, despite strong interest across several markets.

The launch drew queues in cities including Sydney, Shanghai and London, though the crowds were smaller than at earlier iPhone debuts. Reviews praised the design and hinge but flagged camera limitations, apps needing updates and the folded phone’s handling for everyday tasks.

The Duo enters a market long served by Samsung and Huawei. IDC forecasts Apple will capture 44% of foldable-phone market value and 31% of units in 2026, before leading both measures in 2027.

At a glance

  • Apple launched its first foldable phone at about $2,000.
  • Pre-order delivery estimates moved to late January as demand exceeded available supply.
  • IDC expects Apple to lead the foldable market by value and units in 2027.
