660MW Jamshoro Coal Power Project: KE seeks cabinet approval for 100pc Thar coal conversion
Business Recorder • • 1 min read

K-Electric has asked the Power Division to include its proposals in a summary seeking Federal Cabinet approval to convert Unit-1 of the 660MW Jamshoro Coal Power Project to 100% Thar coal, Business Recorder reported. KE wants to manage the project without a consultancy fee and become its power purchaser after conversion.
The company has proposed Harbin Electric International as the conversion contractor, citing its role in building the unit’s boiler. A feasibility study puts EPC costs at $86.2 million and total project costs at $116.6 million; KE has offered to keep the project within that total and complete it within 18 months of financial close, while covering cost overruns caused by delays. The proposals still require relevant approvals, including a post-conversion tariff decision by NEPRA, and include a long-term coal supply agreement and transfer of JPCL’s power purchase agreement to KE.
