Karachi's waste is a Rs1.2b economy it ignores

Karachi’s informal recycling activity is estimated to recover 4,100 tonnes of waste each day and generate Rs1.2 billion a year, according to a 2023 study cited by The Express Tribune. The article argues that the city’s waste problem also worsens pollution and flooding, while better collection and sorting could support recycling businesses and reduce reliance on imported virgin plastic resin.

The report points to local examples, including Concept Loop’s recycled-plastic building products and a biogas facility at Bagh Ibne Qasim. It also notes that Mari Petroleum used Concept Loop pavers at a Daharki project, where more than 7,000 kg of low-value plastic waste was diverted. The article says Karachi needs accountable services, stronger enforcement and ways to include informal recyclers in formal planning.

At a glance

  • Karachi’s informal recycling economy is valued at Rs1.2 billion annually.
  • A Mari Petroleum project used pavers made by Concept Loop from recycled plastic.
  • The article calls for stronger accountability and inclusion of informal recyclers.
