Pakistan owes Iran $12 million for electricity imports, NA told

Pakistan has about $12 million in unpaid bills to Iran’s state power utility, Tavanir, for electricity delivered to parts of Balochistan, Energy Minister Awais Leghari told the National Assembly, according to Profit by Pakistan Today. Imports can reach 204 megawatts under a supply arrangement first signed in November 2002 for the Makran region, including Gwadar. The arrears are being paid in instalments, and the contract was revised in December 2024 and renewed for two years.
The deal requires Pakistan to pay for 30 million kilowatt-hours each month, whether or not that volume is used. Iranian power reaches districts including Kech, Panjgur, Gwadar, Washuk and Chagai, while Qesco bills customers and collects payments at Nepra-approved rates. Load-shedding persists, and a study of equipment to address voltage problems, including a STATCOM, is due by September 2027. The report also cites lengthy transmission lines and voltage fluctuations as obstacles despite the Makran region’s connection to the national grid.
