Govt to introduce competition in LPG sector
Mettis Global • • 1 min read

Pakistan plans to replace allocation quotas for locally produced LPG with public auctions, while opening imports to private businesses, Mettis Global reported on November 4. State-owned firms, including Pakistan State Oil (PSO), have been instructed to secure bulk supplies through government and commercial agreements. Importers will also publish monthly cost details, including the Saudi Aramco contract price, premiums and freight.
The government says auction proceeds will support stabilisation and protection funds, including subsidised LPG for eligible households. Domestic demand is about 2.4 million tonnes a year, compared with local output of 2,000 to 2,500 tonnes daily, with the remainder supplied from abroad. The Competition Commission is tasked with curbing manipulation, while OGRA is expected to strengthen transparency in licensing and oversight.
