You 1%, your employer 5%, on the wage below. Over 30 years: Rs 879,120, of which you pay Rs 146,520 at today's wage.

The federal minimum wage is Rs 40,700 (reported for 2026-27), but Rs 37,000, Rs 40,000, Rs 40,700 and Rs 43,000 are all in use or reported. Rs 43,000 is Sindh's from July 1, 2026.

What is confirmed and what is not: the 6% contribution, the age and 15-year rules and the formula (average monthly wage × years ÷ 50) are in EOBI's published FAQ. The Rs 11,500 minimum comes from Dawn's report of the cabinet decision. The same report says formula pensions were also raised 15% from January 1, 2025; that is not modelled, so your pension may be higher. How EOBI averages wages is not published. Plan the rest in the retirement calculator, and see your lump sum in the gratuity calculator.

How the EOBI old-age pension works

The Employees' Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) is Pakistan's state pension for private-sector workers. Employers register their employees, and contributions of 6% of the notified minimum wage are paid each month: 5% by the employer and 1% by the employee. The base is the minimum wage, not your actual salary, which is why the contribution is a small, flat amount.

To get the old-age pension you must retire at 60 (men) or 55 (women) with at least 15 years of insurable employment. The monthly amount follows EOBI's published formula, subject to a minimum:

Monthly pension = average monthly wages × years of insurable employment ÷ 50
Average monthly wages
the wage EOBI counts, in practice close to the notified minimum wage
Years
years of insurable employment, the years in which contributions were paid

Each year of insurable employment therefore adds 2% of the average wage to the monthly pension. If the formula gives less than the minimum pension, currently Rs 11,500 a month, the minimum is paid.

A worked example

A man aged 40 with 10 years of insurable employment who keeps contributing to 60 will have 30 years. At an average wage of Rs 40,700 the formula gives Rs 24,420 a month. He and his employer pay Rs 2,442 a month between them (Rs 407 from him) on a Rs 40,700 wage base.

Over those 30 years his own 1% share adds up to Rs 146,520 at this wage base, and the employer pays Rs 732,600. The pension of Rs 24,420 a month repays his own share in about 6 months of payments, which is why EOBI is worth keeping on your record even though the amount is modest.

Insurable yearsFormula pensionPension payable
15Rs 12,210Rs 12,210
20Rs 16,280Rs 16,280
25Rs 20,350Rs 20,350
30Rs 24,420Rs 24,420
35Rs 28,490Rs 28,490
40Rs 32,560Rs 32,560

The table uses a Rs 40,700 wage. At that wage the formula beats the minimum pension from 14.1 years, so everyone who qualifies (15 years or more) gets the formula amount and the minimum never applies. The minimum only lifts a pension when the average wage is below about Rs 38,333: at a Rs 37,000 wage, 15 years gives Rs 11,100 by the formula and the Rs 11,500 minimum is paid instead.

Which wage and which minimum wage?

The wage base is where most confusion comes from. EOBI contributions follow the minimum wage notified by the government, and federal and provincial notifications differ. Reported figures include Rs 37,000 (federal and Balochistan wage until June 2026), Rs 40,000 (Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the 2025-26 level), Rs 40,700 (federal minimum wage announced in Budget 2026-27, as reported) and Rs 43,000 (Sindh, cabinet-approved from July 1, 2026). EOBI's own FAQ ties contributions to the minimum wage notified by the Federal Government, so the calculator starts from the federal figure, Rs 40,700. Ask your employer which wage it contributes on. The Sindh figure is cabinet-approved from July 1, 2026; the 2026-27 wages for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are not yet notified, so Rs 40,000 is their 2025-26 level and a higher figure may follow.

What we could not confirm: EOBI's FAQ states the formula but does not say how "average monthly wages" is averaged over a career. The calculator therefore lets you enter the wage and defaults to the minimum wage. Treat the result as a planning estimate and check your entitlement with EOBI when you near retirement.

What the calculator does not model: Dawn reports that the cabinet raised formula-based pensions by 15% from January 1, 2025, alongside the minimum pension. The reports do not say how that uplift combines with the published formula for someone retiring now, so the estimate uses the formula as published and the minimum. Future notified increases are not modelled either, and your actual pension may be higher.

Grant, invalidity and survivor benefits

  • Old-age grant: if you reach retirement age with at least 2 but fewer than 15 years of insurable employment, you receive a one-time grant of one month's average wage for each completed year, with a part-year above six months counted.
  • Invalidity pension: paid before retirement age when an EOBI medical board finds you invalid, after 15 years of contributions or at least 5 years of employment with 3 of the last 5 years contributed. It uses the same formula.
  • Survivor pension: a spouse receives a life pension equal to the minimum pension if the insured person dies in service after 36 months of insurable employment (after 5 years if not employed), or equal to the pension being paid if the person was already a pensioner. Minor children and, in some cases, parents can also receive it.

How much EOBI actually changes your plan

EOBI ties increases to the financial position of its Pension Fund: on August 29, 2026 it said any further rise depends on an actuarial assessment. Do not plan on the pension rising faster than inflation. Add the EOBI amount as pension income in the retirement calculator, and build the rest through the provident fund, your gratuity and a Voluntary Pension System account.

Sources and assumptions

EOBI rules checked November 3, 2026 (the Rs 11,500 minimum pension on EOBI's own site). How EOBI averages the wage in the formula is not published, so the pension is an estimate.

This is an estimate, not an EOBI statement of entitlement. Results are estimates for information and planning only, not tax, legal or investment advice. Check your own case with a tax adviser, your broker or the official source before acting.

FAQ

EOBI Pension Calculator: common questions

What is the EOBI pension formula?+

EOBI's published formula for the old-age pension is: average monthly wages × years of insurable employment ÷ 50. With an average wage of Rs 40,700 and 30 years of insurable employment the pension is Rs 24,420 a month. If the formula gives less than the minimum pension, the minimum is paid.

What is the minimum EOBI pension in 2026?+

Rs 11,500 a month. According to Dawn, the federal cabinet raised it by 15% from Rs 10,000, effective January 1, 2025, with the higher amounts and arrears paid from September 2025, and raised formula-based pensions by 15% from the same date. The calculator applies the minimum but does not add that 15% to the formula, because the reports do not say how it combines with the formula for a new pensioner, so your actual pension may be higher. In an August 29, 2026 statement EOBI itself confirmed the 15% increase from January 1, 2025 and said any further increase depends on the Pension Fund's financial position and an actuarial assessment.

At what age can I get the EOBI old-age pension?+

At 60 for men and 55 for women, provided you have at least 15 years of insurable employment (years in which contributions were paid). Retire with 2 to 14 years and you receive a one-time old-age grant instead of a monthly pension.

How much do employers and employees pay to EOBI?+

Contributions total 6% of the minimum wage notified by the Federal Government, not of actual pay: 5% from the employer and 1% from the employee, deducted from salary. At the reported federal Rs 40,700 wage base that is Rs 2,035 from the employer and Rs 407 from the employee, Rs 2,442 a month in all. At Rs 40,000, the 2025-26 level in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it is Rs 2,400, and at Rs 43,000, the Sindh wage approved from July 1, 2026, it is Rs 2,580. Provincial wages for 2026-27 in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are not yet notified, so ask your employer which wage it uses.

What happens if I have less than 15 years of EOBI contributions?+

With at least 2 but fewer than 15 years of insurable employment you receive an old-age grant at retirement age: one month's average wage for each completed year, plus a part-year of more than six months. For 10 years at Rs 40,700 that is Rs 407,000. You can keep contributing, or have your employer register you in a new job, to reach 15 years.

Is there a survivor or invalidity pension?+

Yes. According to EOBI's published FAQ, an invalidity pension needs 15 years of contributions, or at least 5 years of insurable employment with 3 of the last 5 years contributed, before the invalidity. A survivor pension goes to the spouse of an insured person who dies after at least 36 months of insurable employment while in service (or after 5 years if not employed), equal to the minimum pension, and to a pensioner's spouse equal to the pension being paid. Children and, in some cases, parents may also qualify. The calculator estimates only the old-age pension.

Is the EOBI pension enough to live on?+

For most households no. Even 40 years of contributions at a Rs 40,700 wage gives Rs 32,560 a month before inflation, and the minimum is Rs 11,500. Treat EOBI as a basic floor, add it as pension income in the retirement calculator, and build the rest with a provident fund, a Voluntary Pension System account or your own investments.

Is the EOBI pension taxable?+

The FBR tax year 2027 rate card taxes pension income at 0% up to Rs 10,000,000 a year, with 5% on the excess for recipients under 70, so a typical EOBI pension is not taxed. Check the current rate card if your total pension income is large.
