Rs 100

1% of your Rs 10,000 dividend. You keep Rs 9,900 as halal dividend.

Of every Rs 100 of dividend, Rs 1 goes to charity.

THE GAIN WHEN YOU SELL

Scholars differ on the capital gain

Some scholars ask for the same ratio to be given from the gain when you sell the shares; others do not. Follow your scholar.

Uses the same ratio on the gain.

NOT ZAKAT

Purification does not replace zakat

Purification removes the non-compliant part of the income; scholars generally say it goes to the needy or a welfare cause with no expectation of reward. Zakat on the shares themselves is separate: see the zakat calculator.

What purification is

A company can pass the Shariah screen even though a little of its income comes from interest, for example on its bank balances. The KMI screen allows non-compliant income of up to 5% of revenue. If you hold shares in such a company, a matching slice of every dividend is income you may not keep. Purification means giving that slice away to the needy.

It is not a penalty and not a reason to avoid compliant stocks: it is a routine step of Shariah-compliant investing, like paying zakat, and it is usually a small amount.

How the amount is calculated

Charity = Dividend × Ratio, Halal dividend = Dividend − Charity
Ratio
the company's non-compliant income as a percent of its revenue (its purification ratio)
Dividend
the cash dividend you received on your shares

With per-share figures, the same maths applies to the dividend per share. The only number you need to look up is the ratio. Shariah advisors, fund houses and the screening reports behind the KMI index publish it company by company, and it changes a little each time a company reports new results, so use the latest figure.

A worked example

A dividend of Rs 50,000 from a company with a 1.5% ratio needs Rs 750 given away, leaving Rs 49,250. How the amount grows with the ratio, on a Rs 100,000 dividend:

Purification ratioGive in charityHalal dividend
0.5%Rs 500Rs 99,500
1%Rs 1,000Rs 99,000
2%Rs 2,000Rs 98,000
3%Rs 3,000Rs 97,000
5%Rs 5,000Rs 95,000

Even at the 5% screening limit, which few stocks reach, the charity share of a dividend is small.

Capital gains and purification

Scholars differ on whether the profit from selling a compliant share needs purifying. One view says the share price reflects the whole company, whose business is halal, so only dividends are affected. Another applies the same ratio to the gain. If you sold shares for a Rs 200,000 gain and your scholar asks you to purify it too, a 1.5% ratio adds Rs 3,000 to the Rs 750 on a Rs 50,000 dividend, Rs 3,750 in all. The calculator keeps this optional because it is a matter of scholarly opinion. The tax on the gain itself is separate: see the capital gains tax calculator.

A simple purification routine

  1. Collect your dividends. Your broker or CDC statement lists every dividend credited to you, with the date and amount. Purify each payout; do not wait for a single annual total unless your scholar says that is fine.
  2. Find the ratio for each company from the latest Shariah advisor or fund house report. Different stocks have different ratios, so work stock by stock.
  3. Work out the amount here (pick the stock, or enter the dividend), add up the totals and keep the figure aside.
  4. Give it away to the needy or a welfare cause, as your scholar advises, and keep a note of what you gave and when.

Two common slips: using the wrong company's ratio, and applying the ratio to the whole value of your holding instead of to the dividend. Purification is a share of income, not of your capital. If you hold units of a Shariah-compliant mutual fund, the fund usually deals with purification itself and reports it, so check the factsheet or ask the fund house before doing it twice.

What the KMI screen checks

The purification ratio comes from one of the screens a company must pass to enter the KMI Shariah-compliant list:

  • Core business is halal.
  • Interest-bearing debt below 37% of total assets, tightening to 33% from the November 2026 recomposition.
  • Non-compliant investments below 33% of total assets.
  • Non-compliant income below 5% of revenue. This is the number you purify.
  • Illiquid assets at least 25% of total assets, and a share price at or above net liquid assets per share.

Check a stock against these tests with the Shariah compliance calculator. Purification is separate from zakat on the same shares, which the zakat calculator covers, and from the tax withheld on the dividend (see the dividend tax calculator).

FAQ

Dividend Purification Calculator: common questions

What is dividend purification?+

Shariah screening allows a company to be called compliant even if a small part of its income, under 5% of revenue in the KMI screen, comes from interest or other non-compliant sources. Purification means giving away the matching share of the dividend you receive, so that the income you keep is entirely halal.

How do I calculate the purification amount?+

Multiply the dividend you received by the company's non-compliant income ratio. A Rs 50,000 dividend from a company with a 1.5% ratio needs Rs 750 given in charity, leaving Rs 49,250 as halal dividend. Enter the dividend and the ratio above to do the same for your shares.

Where do I find a company's purification ratio?+

Shariah advisors and fund houses publish purification ratios for the stocks they cover from time to time, and the screening reports behind the KMI index list the non-compliant income of each company. Use the latest figure for the company, and ask your scholar or Islamic broker if you cannot find one. The default in this calculator is only an example.

Do I have to purify capital gains too?+

Scholars differ. Some say only dividends need purification because a sale price reflects the market's value of the whole company; others apply the same ratio to the capital gain as well. This calculator leaves capital gains off by default and lets you add them with a switch on the page. Follow the view of your own scholar.

Is purification the same as zakat?+

No. Purification disposes of income that is not halal for you to keep, and it does not count toward zakat. Zakat is a separate yearly obligation of 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, including the value of your shares. Use the zakat calculator for that.

What is the KMI purification limit?+

The KMI screen requires non-compliant income to be under 5% of a company's revenue, so the purification ratio of an index stock is below 5%. In practice most compliant companies sit well under it, often below 2%. A company that exceeds it drops out of the Shariah-compliant list at the next review.

Should I purify before or after tax is deducted?+

Most guidance purifies the dividend declared by the company. The tax withheld from the dividend goes to the government, so some scholars purify the amount you actually receive and others the amount declared. Enter the figure your scholar tells you to use. The difference is usually small.
