What will the next petrol price be?

Nobody can know the next price before OGRA publishes it, but its inputs are public. Each day's price uses the average of the last seven working days of Platts prices, so the newest days tell you which way the average is heading.

  • Petrol: the latest Platts price ($104.05) is below the 7 day average ($118.62). If world prices stay here, the average, and the pump price with it, will drift down over the next few days.
  • Diesel: the latest Platts price ($147.84) is below the 7 day average ($153.79). If world prices stay here, the average, and the pump price with it, will drift down over the next few days.

This is a reading of the published inputs, not a forecast: the premium, freight, rupee rate and levies can move too.

Petrol prices and Pakistan Stock Exchange shares

Fuel prices feed straight into the earnings of these listed companies. Open a stock for its live price, chart and news.

Oil marketing companies

They sell petrol and diesel through their pumps at OGRA's price and earn a fixed margin per litre, so volumes matter more than the price. Daily price changes also move the value of the fuel they hold in stock.

Refineries

Local refineries are paid at the import parity price, so their earnings follow the gap between product prices (petrol, diesel) and crude oil, and the levy and premium rules the government sets.

Oil and gas producers

Exploration and production companies sell crude oil and gas at prices linked to world oil prices, so they gain when crude rises and lose when it falls.

Guide

How the petrol price is set in Pakistan

Pakistan's petrol and diesel prices follow a published formula. Here is who sets them, when they change and what goes into every litre.

Who sets the price, and when

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) works out the maximum ex-depot price of petrol and high speed diesel under the pricing mechanism notified by the federal government. Since July 21, 2026 it does this every working day and publishes the new price with its full calculation on its website.

The new price is usually posted between 10 pm and midnight and takes effect at 12:00 am the next day. The price set on Saturday also covers Sunday and Monday. Before July 2026, prices changed weekly (March to July 2026) and, before that, every fortnight on the 1st and 16th of the month.

What goes into a litre

The starting point is the international price: a seven working day rolling average of Platts Arab Gulf assessments (gasoline 92 RON for petrol; Dubai crude plus a diesel crack for diesel), plus the premium and freight PSO pays on its cargoes. That dollar cost is converted at the State Bank's seven day average exchange rate and divided by 158.98 litres per barrel.

Customs duty and port incidentals turn it into the ex-refinery (import) price. Then come the inland freight margin (IFEM), the oil marketing company margin and the dealer margin. On top sit the petroleum levy and the climate support levy (Rs 5 per litre). Petrol and diesel are currently exempt from sales tax. The breakdown section shows today's numbers line by line.

Why the price is the same across Pakistan

The Inland Freight Equalization Margin (IFEM) pools the cost of moving fuel from Karachi to depots across the country, so the notified price is the same in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta.

The notified price is a maximum ex-depot price and excludes secondary freight from the depot to each pump, so a pump far from a depot can charge slightly more. Each oil company publishes its pump-wise prices.

Why petrol does not fall as fast as crude oil

Because the formula uses a seven day average, a sharp move in world prices reaches the pump over about a week, not overnight. The rupee rate, premiums and freight also move on their own, and the levies are fixed rupee amounts that do not fall when oil does.

Crude oil is only part of the cost: petrol is priced off refined gasoline, which can trade well above or below crude. See crude oil prices for Brent, WTI and Dubai.

High octane, kerosene, LPG and CNG

High octane (HOBC) is deregulated: each oil company sets its own price, so we show PSO's. Kerosene and light diesel oil are notified weekly. LPG is notified monthly by OGRA as a maximum consumer price per kg for locally produced LPG; market prices for cylinders are often higher. CNG prices are not notified nationally.

Who decides the petrol price in Pakistan?

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) calculates the price daily under the pricing mechanism set by the federal government. The government sets the petroleum levy and the climate support levy separately.

Why is the petrol price the same in every city?

The Inland Freight Equalization Margin spreads the cost of transport evenly, so the notified price is the same nationwide. Pumps can charge slightly more because the notified price excludes secondary freight from the depot to the pump.

Is the petrol price the same at PSO, Shell, TotalEnergies and Attock?

Yes for regular petrol and diesel: OGRA's notified maximum ex-depot price applies to every oil marketing company. High octane is different, because each company sets its own price.

Why does petrol not get cheaper as fast as crude oil?

The formula averages international prices over seven working days, so changes arrive gradually. Petrol also follows refined gasoline prices rather than crude, and the levies are fixed rupee amounts.

How is the petrol price calculated?

Platts Arab Gulf price (7 day average) plus PSO's premium and freight, converted at the State Bank rate, plus customs duty and incidentals, then inland freight (IFEM), oil company and dealer margins, and the petroleum and climate support levies. See the price breakdown.

What is the price of a litre of petrol per km?

It depends on your vehicle's mileage. A 70cc motorcycle doing 50 km per litre spends a litre's price every 50 km. Use the fuel cost calculator to work out a trip or a month.
