Leaving the profit in adds Rs 3,311
Add each after-tax payout back into the deposit instead of taking it out.
Over 1 year. Taking the profit out each time suits a monthly income; leaving it in grows the balance.
ZAKAT ON 1 RAMADAN
Banks deduct zakat at source
2.5% on 1 Ramadan from savings and term deposits at or above the government nisab (Rs 503,529 for 1447 AH).
If you pay zakat yourself, or your fiqh exempts you, you can file a CZ-50 declaration with the bank before 1 Ramadan to stop the deduction at source.
Every payout
| Period | Profit | Tax | Net profit | Deposit balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Rs 105,000 | Rs 21,000 | Rs 84,000 | Rs 1,000,000 |
Bank rates are the figure you enter, since every bank sets its own. Withholding tax is the tax year 2027 rate on bank profit (20% for a filer).
How the deposit calculator works
A term deposit pays a fixed profit rate on the amount you deposit. The calculator splits the term into payout periods (a month, a quarter, six months, a year, or the whole term), works out the profit for each, takes withholding tax off every payment, and adds the periods up. If the term does not divide evenly, the leftover months earn profit for their own length.
Net profit = profit × (1 − tax rate)
- Balance
- the deposit (plus any profit you leave in the account)
- Months
- length of the payout period: 1, 3, 6, 12, or the whole term for maturity
- Tax rate
- 20% for filers, 40% for non-filers
A savings account works the same way but profit is credited on a schedule and, if you leave it, compounds: the next credit is earned on the larger balance, and because tax is deducted at source each time, it compounds on the after-tax amount. The net yield shown is the compound annual rate after tax, which lets you compare deposits that pay monthly, at maturity or with compounding on equal terms.
A worked example
Rs 1,000,000 at 10.5% for 12 months. Paid monthly, a term deposit earns Rs 8,750 a month, tax takes Rs 1,750, and a filer receives Rs 7,000. Over the year that is Rs 84,000 of net profit.
| Rs 1,000,000 at 10.5%, 12 months | Gross profit | Net profit, filer | Net profit, non-filer | Net yield, filer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Term deposit, monthly payout | Rs 105,000 | Rs 84,000 | Rs 63,000 | 8.73% |
| Term deposit, profit at maturity | Rs 105,000 | Rs 84,000 | Rs 63,000 | 8.4% |
| Savings account, monthly credit, compounding | Rs 109,138 | Rs 87,311 | Rs 64,851 | 8.73% |
The deposit paid monthly and the one paid at maturity earn the same simple profit, but the monthly payer gives you the cash earlier, which you can spend or reinvest. The savings account compounds, so it gains a little more on the same quoted rate.
Tax and zakat on bank profit
For tax year 2027, banks withhold 20% of profit from filers and 40% from non-filers. For an individual it is a final tax up to Rs 5 millionof profit in the year. Being on the Active Taxpayers List is worth a lot here: the non-filer rate takes twice as much of every payment. Use the income tax calculator for the rest of your income.
Zakat is separate. On 1 Ramadan, banks deduct 2.5% of savings and term deposits at or above the government nisab, which was Rs 503,529 for 1 Ramadan 1447 AH. A CZ-50 declaration, filed before Ramadan, stops the deduction. On the example above, one deduction takes Rs 25,000 and brings the net profit from Rs 84,000 to Rs 59,000. Zakat is a religious obligation rather than a tax, and you owe it anyway on savings above the nisab, so the figure is shown for planning. Check your own position with the zakat calculator.
Bank deposit, National Savings or T-bills
The calculator puts your deposit beside the two main alternatives for the same amount and period. With the rates of October 21, 2026 (National Savings) and October 28, 2026 (T-bills), after tax for a filer:
| Rs 1,000,000 | 12 months, filer | 12 months, non-filer | 36 months, filer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your bank depositAs entered above | Rs 84,000 | Rs 63,000 | Rs 252,000 |
| National SavingsShort Term Savings Certificates: 12 months | Rs 99,620 | Rs 82,040 | Rs 309,060 |
| Treasury bills12-month bill, latest cut-offs | Rs 109,265 | Rs 89,983 | Rs 364,915 |
These are indicative figures: they assume the bank rate above, and each alternative at its current rate with its own tax. A deposit has no auction, no certificate to buy and easier access, but the tax gap is real. See the full detail in the National Savings calculator and the T-bill calculator.
For overseas Pakistanis: Naya Pakistan Certificates
Overseas Pakistanis and residents with declared foreign assets can buy Naya Pakistan Certificates through a Roshan Digital Account. The profit is paid at a fixed rate in rupees or in dollars, with 10% withholding tax as a final tax, and the certificates are exempt from zakat deduction at source. Rates for certificates issued from March 27, 2026 (dollar certificates) and from June 5, 2026 (rupee certificates):
| Term | PKR certificate | USD certificate |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | 11.75% | 6.75% |
| 6 months | 12% | 7% |
| 12 months | 12.25% | 7.25% |
| 3 years | 12.5% | 7.5% |
| 5 years | 12.75% | 7.75% |
The rates may be revised after the State Bank's October policy move, so confirm the current rate with the bank. Minimum amounts differ between banks. Read the Roshan Digital Account guide for how overseas Pakistanis invest.
Before you deposit
- Ask for the rate in writing, and the payout date. Profit paid monthly, quarterly or at maturity changes your cash flow, and some banks credit savings profit only half-yearly.
- Check the early-withdrawal terms. Breaking a term deposit early commonly cuts or removes the profit.
- Compare after tax and after inflation. Test the net yield against price rises with the inflation calculator, and see what compounding does over longer periods with the compound interest calculator.
- Islamic deposits quote an expected profit rate. The actual profit is shared and can differ from the quote.
- Spread across options. Many savers split money between a bank for access, National Savings for the tax edge, and bills or PIBs for term.

FAQ
Bank Term Deposit Calculator: common questions
How is the profit on a term deposit calculated in Pakistan?+
Banks pay profit on a term deposit at a fixed yearly rate on the amount you deposited. For a payout every month, the profit is amount × rate ÷ 12. On Rs 1,000,000 at 10.5%, that is Rs 8,750 a month before tax. If the profit is paid at maturity, it is amount × rate × years, so Rs 105,000 after one year. Withholding tax is then deducted from every payment.
How much monthly profit will Rs 1 million earn in a bank deposit?+
At 10.5% a year, Rs 1,000,000 earns Rs 8,750 a month before tax. A filer is taxed at 20%, so Rs 7,000 reaches the account. A non-filer is taxed at 40% and receives Rs 5,250. Your own bank's rate will differ, so enter it in the calculator.
How much tax is deducted on bank profit?+
For tax year 2027 (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027), banks withhold 20% of profit from filers and 40% from non-filers on deposit profit. For individuals the withholding is final up to Rs 5 million of profit in a year. Bank profit is taxed more heavily than National Savings or government securities, which are taxed at 15% for filers.
Is zakat deducted from savings accounts and fixed deposits?+
Yes. Banks deduct 2.5% zakat on 1 Ramadan from savings and term deposits at or above the government nisab. The figure for 1 Ramadan 1447 AH (February 2026) was Rs 503,529, and the next figure is announced before Ramadan 2027. Current accounts are exempt, and you can avoid the deduction by submitting a CZ-50 declaration on stamp paper before 1 Ramadan. Turn on the zakat card to see the effect.
How does compounding work in a savings account?+
Most banks credit savings profit monthly. If you leave it in the account, the next month's profit is earned on a slightly larger balance. On Rs 1,000,000 at 10.5% with 20% tax deducted each month, the balance grows to Rs 1,087,311 in a year, an effective yield of 8.73% after tax. The calculator assumes profit stays in the account unless you turn compounding off.
Is a term deposit better than National Savings or T-bills?+
On the same Rs 1,000,000 for 12 months after tax for a filer, the calculator shows a 10.5% bank deposit earning Rs 84,000, a 12-month Short Term Savings Certificate Rs 99,620 and a 12-month T-bill Rs 109,265. Bank profit is taxed at 20% against 15% for the others, so a bank needs a clearly higher rate to compete. Banks can offer more liquidity and convenience. The comparison is indicative.
What is the difference between a savings account and a term deposit?+
A savings account lets you withdraw at any time, and the profit rate can change. A term deposit (TDR or fixed deposit) locks the money for a set term at a rate fixed on day one, and cashing it in early usually costs you part or all of the profit. Term deposits usually pay a higher rate to compensate for the lock-in.
Are bank profit rates guaranteed?+
A conventional term deposit's rate is fixed for its term. Savings account rates can change at the bank's discretion. Islamic bank deposits are profit-sharing, so the rate they quote is an expected rate and the actual profit can differ. Always enter the rate the bank gives you in writing.
