Zakat is due on wealth held above the nisab for a full lunar year. The government nisab for the bank deduction on 1 Ramadan 1447 AH was Rs 503,529, fixed for the year; this calculator checks your wealth against today's live nisab, which moves with metal rates. To be exempt from the bank deduction you file a CZ-50 declaration before 1 Ramadan; your own duty to pay zakat above the nisab remains. Opinions differ on some points, so consult your scholar.
How zakat is calculated
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, due once a year on wealth you have held above the nisab for a full lunar year. Add up the assets that count (cash, bank balances, gold, silver, shares and funds, money owed to you, goods you hold for sale), subtract debts that are due now, and compare what is left with the nisab. If it is at or above the nisab, 2.5% is due.
- Assets
- cash, bank, gold, silver, shares (by method), funds, loans you will recover, business stock, other
- Debts
- bills and loan instalments that are due now
What does not count: the home you live in, the car you drive, your tools and clothes. Zakat the bank has already deducted on 1 Ramadan comes off what you still owe.
Nisab: silver or gold?
The nisab is defined in metal, so its rupee value moves with the gold and silver rates. There are two traditional measures, and they are far apart because silver is much cheaper than gold per tola.
| Basis | Weight | Value today |
|---|---|---|
| Silver nisab | 52.5 tola (612.36 g) | Rs 356,685 |
| Gold nisab | 7.5 tola (87.48 g) | Rs 3,086,250 |
Rates live as of November 3, 2026. Many Pakistani scholars use the silver nisab because it is the lower threshold and brings more of the poor's due into the system; others use gold when wealth is mostly in cash. The calculator defaults to silver and lets you switch. Check today's metal prices in the gold calculator, and if your jeweller weighs in masha and ratti, the tola and gram converter turns it into tola.
Zakat on PSX shares
The scholars' views on shares differ, so the calculator gives you both common methods rather than hiding the choice.
- Shares held to trade. Treated like trade goods: zakat on the full market value on your zakat date.
- Shares held long term. Treated by many scholars as a share of the company's assets, so only the part of its assets that is itself zakatable counts. A common proxy is 25% of the market value. You can enter a different percentage if your scholar or the company gives one.
Whichever method you choose, zakat is on the market value of the shares, not the price you paid. Please consult your scholar on which fits your intention when you bought.
A worked example
Rs 200,000 cash, Rs 1,300,000 in a savings account, Rs 2,000,000 of PSX shares and Rs 100,000 of bills due now. The result depends on how the shares are counted:
| Shares as trading | Shares long term (25%) | |
|---|---|---|
| Zakatable assets | Rs 3,500,000 | Rs 2,000,000 |
| Less debts due now | Rs 100,000 | Rs 100,000 |
| Zakatable wealth | Rs 3,400,000 | Rs 1,900,000 |
| Zakat at 2.5% | Rs 85,000 | Rs 47,500 |
| Still owed after Rs 32,500 deducted by the bank | Rs 52,500 | Rs 15,000 |
The gap between the two columns is why the method matters, and why the calculator shows it instead of picking one for you.
The bank deduction and the government nisab
Separately from your own calculation, Pakistani banks deduct zakat from certain accounts under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance. On 1 Ramadan they deduct 2.5% from savings and profit-and-loss sharing accounts holding at least the government nisab, which for 1 Ramadan 1447 AH was Rs 503,529, notified on February 16, 2026. Current accounts are exempt, listed shares are not deducted at source, and mutual fund units are deducted on redemption.
This government figure is the nisab expressed as one rupee amount for administering the deduction. Press reports say it follows gold and silver prices when it is notified, but it is fixed for the year, so it can sit away from the live nisab above. If you qualify for an exemption from the deduction, you submit a CZ-50 declaration on Rs 50 stamp paper before 1 Ramadan, and your own obligation to pay zakat above the nisab remains. The figure for 1448 AH, around February 2027, has not been announced. Enter any amount your bank deducted under More options so you do not pay twice. The fixed deposit calculator shows the 1 Ramadan deduction on a term deposit.

Zakat on shares is different from purification, the charity share of dividends from Shariah-compliant companies whose income includes a small non-compliant portion. Use the dividend purification calculator for that, and the dividend tax calculator to see what reaches you after tax.

FAQ
Zakat Calculator: common questions
What is the nisab for zakat in Pakistan?+
Nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due: 52.5 tola (612.36 grams) of silver or 7.5 tola (87.48 grams) of gold, valued at the current rate. At today's rates the silver nisab is about Rs 356,685 and the gold nisab about Rs 3,086,250. Silver is the lower threshold and the one most commonly followed in Pakistan.
How much is zakat on money and savings?+
Zakat is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth (cash, bank balances, gold, silver, shares, funds and money owed to you, minus debts due now) if you have held wealth above the nisab for a full lunar year. On Rs 1,000,000 of savings that is Rs 25,000.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery?+
Yes, on gold and silver you own, including jewellery worn every day, according to the Hanafi position followed by most Pakistanis. Value it by weight and purity at today's rate: the calculator accepts tola or grams and 18K to 24K gold. Scholars of other schools differ on jewellery in regular use, so follow your scholar.
How is zakat calculated on PSX shares?+
Scholars differ, so the calculator offers both common methods. Shares bought to trade are treated as trade goods: 2.5% of their full market value. Shares held for the long term (for dividends and growth) are treated by many scholars as owning a share of the company's assets, so only the zakatable part of the company's wealth counts; 25% of the market value is a common proxy. You can also enter your own percentage. Consult your scholar on which applies to you.
Does my bank deduct zakat automatically?+
Yes, from savings and profit-and-loss sharing accounts holding the government nisab or more on 1 Ramadan, at 2.5%. Current accounts are exempt, and the deduction is not made on listed shares. The government nisab for 1 Ramadan 1447 AH was Rs 503,529. Mutual fund units are deducted on redemption unless you filed a CZ-50 declaration.
What is the CZ-50 form?+
CZ-50 is the declaration, made on Rs 50 stamp paper under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, that exempts your accounts from the zakat deduction at source. You submit it to the bank before 1 Ramadan. Who qualifies is set by the Ordinance, so ask your bank or scholar. An exemption from the deduction does not remove your own obligation to pay zakat if you are above the nisab.
What is the difference between the government nisab and the Shariah nisab?+
The government nisab (Rs 503,529 for 1447 AH) is the nisab fixed as one rupee amount. The state announces it before Ramadan to decide which bank accounts have zakat deducted at source, and press reports say it follows gold and silver prices when it is set. It then stays the same all year. The Shariah nisab is 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold at today's rate, so it moves with the market, and it decides whether zakat is due on your total wealth. This calculator checks your wealth against that live nisab and treats the bank deduction separately.
Are debts deducted before working out zakat?+
Debts that are due now, such as unpaid bills, credit card balances and instalments falling due this year, are deducted from your assets. Most scholars do not deduct the whole of a long-term loan, only what is due now. Money owed to you that you expect to recover is added to your assets.
