Pakistan Railways targets 20% freight market share under reform plan
Mettis Global • • 1 min read

Pakistan Railways is seeking to raise freight’s portion of national transport activity to 20%, from 8%, and lift its passenger portion from 5% to 7.52% after Main Line-1 (ML-1) is upgraded. Mettis Global, citing APP, says the targets form part of a reform programme intended to update the network and strengthen the department’s finances.
The plan also covers work on the ML-2 and ML-3 routes, more capacity for moving goods, freight terminals and logistics parks, alongside improved facilities for travellers. Digital measures include online ticket purchases through RABTA, electronic freight reservations, train tracking and a SAP-based system for finance, procurement and staff administration; RABTA is already operating. Pakistan Railways also intends to invite private operators into selected commercial land projects and outsource management of some hospitals and schools, with the stated aim of drawing investment and easing government costs.
