What you pay on every PSX trade

A share trade on the PSX has two kinds of cost: charges that depend on your broker, and charges that are the same for everyone. Both apply on the way in and on the way out, so a round trip pays them twice.

  • Broker commission. The biggest item by far. A common schedule is 0.15% of the trade value with a minimum of Rs 0.03 per share, capped at 2.5%.
  • Sales tax on commission. A provincial tax on the broker's service: 15% in Sindh and 16% in Punjab and Islamabad. It also applies to the PSX trading fee.
  • PSX trading fee. Rs 3.5 for every Rs 100,000 traded.
  • SECP levy. Rs 0.65 for every Rs 100,000.
  • NCCPL fees. About Rs 1.11 for every Rs 100,000, covering clearing and NCCPL's own SECP share.
  • CDC transaction fee. 0.0036% of the value, minimum Rs 5, on each buy and sell.
  • PSX regulatory fee. Listed as discontinued from August 29, 2025 in the PSX schedule. It is off by default here; switch it on if your contract note still shows it.

Capital value tax and advance tax on share trades are 0% in the PSX schedule. Capital gains tax is a separate charge on profit, collected through NCCPL.

What a trade costs: Rs 100,000 and Rs 1,000,000

Here is the buy side of two trades at 0.15% commission with a Sindh broker. Almost everything scales with the trade value, except the CDC fee, which has a minimum of Rs 5, so small trades cost proportionally more.

ChargeRs 100,000 buyRs 1,000,000 buy
Broker commissionRs 150.00Rs 1,500.00
Sales tax on commissionRs 22.50Rs 225.00
PSX trading feeRs 3.50Rs 35.00
Sales tax on PSX feesRs 0.53Rs 5.25
SECP levyRs 0.65Rs 6.50
NCCPL feesRs 1.11Rs 11.10
CDC transaction feeRs 5.00Rs 36.00
TotalRs 183.29Rs 1,818.85
As a percent of the trade0.183%0.182%

Notice that about 94% of the cost of a trade is your broker's commission and the sales tax on it. The exchange, clearing and depository charges together are small. That makes the commission rate the one number worth negotiating, and it is why the commission fields under More options matter most. Our guide on choosing a stock broker covers what else to compare.

The Rs 100,000 trade is also what the default trading cost in the stock average, position size and risk and reward calculators is struck on: 0.18% a side, or 0.37% for a round trip.

How profit and break-even are worked out

The calculator prices each side separately (the buy at your buy price, the sell at your sell price), adds them up, and then taxes the gain. The result is the profit you could actually withdraw.

Net profit = (sell value − buy value) − costs − CGT
Costs
all fees on the buy side plus all fees on the sell side
CGT
capital gains tax rate for your purchase date and filer status, charged on a positive gain only

The break-even sell price is the price where that net profit is exactly zero. Because the commission has a per-share minimum and the tax depends on the gain, there is no tidy closed form, so the calculator finds the price by repeatedly halving a search range (bisection) until profit after costs and tax is zero to the paisa. Costs and tax always rise more slowly than the price, so exactly one such price exists.

A worked example

Buy 1,000 shares at Rs 100 and sell at Rs 110, as a filer who bought after July 1, 2024 (so 15% capital gains tax), through a Sindh broker at 0.15%.

Price gain (Rs 110,000 less Rs 100,000)Rs 10,000
Buy-side costsRs 183.29
Sell-side costsRs 201.11
Profit after costsRs 9,615.60
Capital gains tax (15% of the price gain)Rs 1,500.00
Net profit after costs and taxRs 8,115.60
Break-even sell priceRs 100.43

A 10% price rise therefore leaves you with a +8.1% return. The round trip cost is 0.38% of the buy value, so even a flat price loses you money.

Capital gains tax on the trade

Capital gains tax on listed shares is worked out by NCCPL and collected through your broker, which is why it never appears as a separate bill. For filers the rate depends on when the shares were bought: 15% on shares bought on or after July 1, 2024, a sliding scale from 15% down to 0% for shares bought July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024, and 12.5% for shares bought July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2022. Non-filers pay double these rates (NCCPL's tax year 2027 table). The capital gains tax calculator shows the full table, handles several purchase lots and carries forward losses.

Intraday and delivery trades

In Pakistan a trade you buy and sell on the same day (intraday) and a trade you hold (delivery) pay the same taxes and exchange fees. What changes is the broker: many offer a lower commission for day trading, and positions netted before settlement may not trigger a CDC transaction fee. If you trade often, a lower intraday commission adds up quickly, so enter your own figures under More options. Remember that day traders still pay capital gains tax on profit, at the rate for shares bought today.

FAQ

PSX Brokerage & Trading Profit Calculator: common questions

What are the charges when you trade shares on the PSX?+

Each buy or sell carries your broker's commission, provincial sales tax on that commission (15% in Sindh, 16% in Punjab), the PSX trading fee, the SECP levy, NCCPL clearing fees and the CDC transaction fee. On a Rs 100,000 trade at 0.15% commission in Sindh these add up to about Rs 183.29, or 0.18%, per side. Capital gains tax is charged separately on profits.

How much brokerage do PSX brokers charge?+

Brokers set their own commission, usually capped at 2.5% of the trade. A common schedule is 0.15% of the value or Rs 0.03 per share, whichever is higher, and larger traders and online brokers often negotiate lower. Ask for your commission schedule in writing and enter it under More options to see your own numbers.

What is the break-even price of a share trade?+

It is the sell price at which your profit after all buying and selling costs and capital gains tax is exactly zero. If you buy at Rs 100 with a Sindh broker at 0.15% commission, you need to sell near Rs 100.43 (+0.43%) just to get your money back. This calculator solves it exactly rather than approximating it.

Is sales tax charged on brokerage in Pakistan?+

Yes. Brokerage is a service, so a provincial sales tax applies to the commission, and to the PSX trading fee. The rate follows the broker's province: 15% for Karachi brokers (Sindh) and 16% for Punjab and Islamabad brokers. Choose your broker's province under More options. Check your broker's contract note to confirm which rate it charges.

Is capital gains tax included in the profit shown?+

Yes. The hero figure is profit after both sides' costs and capital gains tax. Shares bought on or after July 1, 2024 pay 15% for filers. Older purchases pay less the longer you held them, so set your purchase date under More options. NCCPL calculates the tax through your broker, so the exact figure can differ slightly.

What is the CDC fee on a share trade?+

The Central Depository Company charges a transaction fee of 0.0036% of the trade value, with a minimum of Rs 5, on each buy and sell. On small trades the minimum applies, which is why a Rs 10,000 trade costs proportionally more than a Rs 1,000,000 one. You can switch it off under More options if your broker absorbs it.

Is the PSX regulatory fee still charged?+

PSX's current schedule of charges ends the regulatory fee (about Rs 0.62 per Rs 100,000) from August 29, 2025, and no later schedule brings it back, so the calculator leaves it off. If your contract note still shows a regulatory fee, switch it on under More options.

Do intraday trades cost less than delivery trades?+

Taxes and exchange fees are the same. The difference is commission: many brokers quote a lower rate for same-day trades, and positions that are squared off before settlement may not attract the CDC fee. Enter your broker's intraday commission under More options, and turn off the CDC fee if it is not charged on your trades.
