South African rand steady as investors weigh AGOA decision, await key election results
Business Recorder • • 1 min read

Business Recorder reported that the rand was nearly unchanged against the dollar in early Johannesburg trading on Tuesday, at 16.62 per dollar by 0630 GMT. Investors were assessing a planned US move to suspend South Africa from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) from January 1, 2027, alongside upcoming election results.
The US trade representative cited human-rights, corruption and US-interest concerns in notifying Congress about the proposed suspension, which also covers Rwanda. South Africa’s trade ministry said it would assist affected industries and keep working to expand trade and investment ties with the United States.
ETM Analytics said the economic effects could be milder than headlines imply, as markets had already accounted for much of the decision. Traders were also watching US midterm voting and South African local elections, while the yield on South Africa’s 2035 government bond rose 1.5 basis points to 8.51%.
