A biomass energy facility in Sajawal has started operating as Pakistan’s first demonstration site of its kind, Profit by Pakistan Today reported. The $3.5 million project is based in Pinnah Reserved Forest and was opened jointly by UNDP and the Sindh government. It is one of four sites planned through a five-year programme backed by the Global Environment Facility.
The programme, carried out by UNDP with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, is intended to advance biomass technologies in Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The plant will showcase ways to turn farm and forest leftovers into cleaner fuel, while the initiative also includes pellet-making, community nurseries and improved cookstoves to support local livelihoods. UNDP Resident Representative Dr Samuel Rizk said the effort could address rural energy needs while conserving forests, and also aims to strengthen sustainable forest management and indigenous plantations.
